Grad School Cover Letters: Making a good first impression

As the saying goes, first impression is always the last impression. Grad school applicants who make positive first impressions always make a lasting impression on the members of the committee usually have a better chance of acceptance as compared to others whose personal statements are not that effective.


Many programs receive a huge number of applicants every year, from which only a few applicants are selected. Your personal statement is something that defines your impression. What does one say in the cover letter? The admission committees are looking for a spark, and are finding candidates who have great potential, evidenced by past academic qualifications. The main purpose behind an effective cover letter is to indicate the necessary background, without going into details. Always include relevant information such as your work experience, any degrees, your educational background or, any degrees that you are currently enrolled in or the expected time when you will complete your respective degree.


Another element to make a good impression in front if the admission committee is the way you format the cover letter. A cover letter should be formatted to look normal. The cover letter should cover all 6 elements that are to be included in the cover letter: date, address of recipient, the situation, the body of the letter. However, less formality can be shown if you are sending the cover letter through an email, and it is somewhat \acceptable to exclude certain elements of a standard cover letter. Most of the time, it is advisable to format the initial e-mail contacts in the same way as the standard letter. Make sure you do not send it as an attachment, make it the actual content of the message.
